Chief Executive Carrie Lam today congratulated Hong Kong swimming athlete Siobhan Haughey for claiming Olympic silver in Women's 200m Freestyle event, bringing more good news to the city after fencer Edgar Cheung’s first gold.

It is the first medal in a swimming event at the Olympic Games in Hong Kong's history and the second Olympic silver medal after the one awarded at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Mrs Lam said that Miss Haughey fully demonstrated great skill and perseverance to stay ahead of competitors, achieving an excellent result for Hong Kong. She added she has brought glory to the city and made her proud.

The Hong Kong, China Delegation has won a gold medal and a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, achieving historic breakthroughs in fencing and swimming.

Mrs Lam believed that with the support of all Hong Kong people, the athletes will continue to perform at their best to strive for good results.

Secretary for Home Affairs Caspar Tsui also sent his congratulations, saying that Miss Haughey has performed brilliantly and impressed the world as a Hong Kong athlete.

He added despite the delay of the Tokyo Games for one year which has affected the arrangements of competitions and training, Miss Haughey still managed to overcome all difficulties and achieved victory.

He wished her success and glory in future endeavours in sports.

Miss Haughey nabbed the silver medal in the Women's 200m Individual Medley event in the Summer Youth Olympic Games 2014.

In the same year, her teams clinched bronze medals in the Women's 4x100m Medley Relay and the Women's 4x200m Freestyle Relay in the Asian Games.
