Chief Executive Carrie Lam today congratulated Hong Kong fencer Edgar Cheung who won the gold medal in the Men’s Foil Individual competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

This is Hong Kong athletes’ first medal at the Tokyo Games and the city’s first Olympic medal in fencing.

It is also the first Olympic gold after the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the city’s second gold medal after the one at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

Mrs Lam said as with many members of the public, she followed Mr Cheung’s matches closely to cheer for him.

“We are thrilled that with his outstanding skills and calmness as well as perseverance in adversity during the competition, he has succeeded in making history for Hong Kong. His excellent result is testimony to the capability of Hong Kong athletes and makes all Hong Kong people proud.”

Mrs Lam added that she hopes the Hong Kong, China Delegation will continue to unleash their potential in the other events and achieve outstanding results.

Secretary for Home Affairs Caspar Tsui also sent his congratulations. He said Mr Cheung has fully met the challenges to display his skills and maintained a high level of concentration during the competition.
