101 HIV cases reported

May 25, 2021

A total of 101 additional cases of HIV infection were reported in the first quarter of the year, the Centre for Health Protection announced today.

Of the new cases, 87 were males and 14 were females, bringing the total number of reported HIV infections to 10,886 since 1984.

Fifty people acquired the virus through homosexual or bisexual contact, while 22 cases acquired the infection by heterosexual contact.

The routes of transmission for 29 cases have yet to be determined.

The centre said sex remains the major mode of HIV transmission and people should use condoms consistently and properly to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV.

There were 24 new cases of AIDS reported in the quarter, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 2,254 since 1985.
