2 vaccination cases reported

March 7, 2021

The Department of Health said as at 6pm today, in the past 24 hours it received two reports from the Hospital Authority regarding cases admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with suspected serious adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination.

One of the cases involves an 80-year-old man who has a history of diabetes, carotid atherosclerosis, hypertension and stroke. He received the COVID-19 jab at Tin Fai Road Sports Centre Community Vaccination Centre in Yuen Long on March 1.

He sought treatment at Caritas Medical Centre’s accident and emergency department on March 6 due to chest pain. He did not respond well to treatment and was transferred to the ICU for further management that night.

He was provisionally diagnosed to have acute coronary syndrome and is in a critical condition.

Another case involves a 72-year-old woman who has a history of diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension and hypothyroidism. She received the COVID-19 vaccination at Tseung Kwan O Sports Centre Community Vaccination Centre on March 6.

She felt malaise after the vaccination and skipped two doses of regular insulin. She was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital after a family member found her general condition had decreased this morning.

She was found to have severe diabetic ketoacidosis and was transferred to the ICU for further treatment.

The department said it immediately contacted the authority to obtain more information for investigation and evaluation.

The department will pass the cases to the Expert Committee on Clinical Events Assessment Following COVID-19 Immunisation for causality assessment, and the assessment result will be released.
