Helper boarding house issue clarified

January 14, 2021

The Immigration Department is mainly responsible for the assessment of the employment visa applications of foreign domestic helpers (FDHs), while the regulation of boarding facilities for them is outside its purview.

The department made the statement in response to the Ombudsman’s decision to initiate a direct investigation to examine the Government's regulation of boarding facilities for FDHs.

In the course of the investigation by the Office of the Ombudsman, the Immigration Department will assist it to further understand the functions and powers of the department, and the delineation of responsibilities and distribution of the Government’s work in the regulation of boarding facilities for FDHs.
