Pet cat tests positive for COVID-19

January 4, 2021

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department (AFCD) today said that a pet cat belonging to a COVID-19 patient has tested positive for the virus.

The case involves a domestic short-hair cat whose owner lives in Lam Tin. It was sent to the AFCD for quarantine on December 27.

The department explained that while the cat’s samples tested positive for COVID-19, it has not shown any symptoms.

The AFCD will closely monitor the cat and conduct repeated testing.

It emphasised that currently there is no evidence that pets are playing a role in the spread of COVID-19 among humans.

Pet owners should adopt good hygiene practices and maintain a clean and hygienic household environment. People who are sick should restrict contact with animals.

Currently, eight dogs and eight cats have tested positive for COVID-19.
