HK students score good results
The Education Bureau today praised Hong Kong students for their outstanding performance in mathematics in an international trend study.
The Trends in International Mathematics & Science Study 2019 is organised by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement to study students’ performance in mathematics and science at Grade 4 and Grade 8, equivalent to Primary 4 and Secondary 2.
In mathematics, Hong Kong’s Primary 4 students again ranked second while Secondary 2 students came fifth, which is slightly below their fourth ranking in the previous study conducted in 2015.
Meanwhile, a large proportion of Hong Kong Primary 4 and Secondary 2 students attained the advanced level of international benchmark in mathematics. The proportion of Primary 4 and Secondary 2 students reaching the advanced level in the subject was 38% and 32%, well above the international median of 7% and 5%.
In science, although Hong Kong students performed less proficiently than in the previous study, the proportion of Primary 4 and Secondary 2 students reaching the advanced level in the subject was 8% and 9%, higher than the international median of 6% and 7%.
The Education Bureau will draw reference from the study as well as the performance of Hong Kong students in other assessments and activities, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to promote the development of school education.
It will also review the prevailing curriculum policies and teaching and learning measures to work out measures to boost students' performance in science.
