The Centre for Health Protection today said it is investigating 90 additional COVID-19 cases, of which 79 are locally transmitted.
During a press briefing this afternoon, the centre’s Communicable Disease Branch Head Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan noted that among the locally transmitted cases, 31 have an unknown source of infection.
Dr Chuang explained that the high number of such cases suggests there is a lot of silent transmission in the community.
“The situation is worrying because we cannot find any identifiable risk factors among these patients.
"For those who have identifiable risk factors, such as those who visited certain restaurants or dance venues or participated in high-risk activities or gatherings, I think most of them should have been tested if they were found by us as close contacts.
“But because some patients may have gone to many places in the city, they may have infected others. So there are silent carriers who may have infected other people in the community through other means, for example, they went to the same restaurant or same market and other places they may have forgotten about.”
The CHP reminded members of the public with COVID-19 symptoms to seek medical advice and get tested as soon as possible.
Of the infections with links to previous cases, 21 are related to the dance club cluster and five are workers of a LOHAS Park construction site in Tseung Kwan O.
The centre added that there are 11 imported cases.
