The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) today said it is investigating 92 additional COVID-19 cases, of which 89 are locally transmitted.

The centre’s Communicable Disease Branch Head Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan explained at a press briefing this afternoon that the cases involve 49 men and 43 women ranging in age from two to 83.

Among the locally transmitted cases, 17 have unknown sources of infection and 72 have links with previous cases. The majority of the linked cases are related to the dance club cluster.

The CHP warned of a possible COVID-19 outbreak at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital after a woman who stayed at the hospital and two of its staff tested preliminarily positive for the virus.

The 77-year-old woman had stayed at the hospital since mid-August and developed a fever in recent days. She tested positive for the virus and subsequently passed away.

One of the hospital’s staff who tested positive was involved in the resuscitation of the patient, Dr Chaung said, adding that 13 patients staying in the same ward and more than 30 staff have to undergo quarantine.

“The preliminarily COVID-positive patient stayed in a single room, but in the same ward there are a lot of single rooms with 13 other patients also staying in different single rooms.

“Because they share the same ward, they have the same healthcare staff caring for them and we have two healthcare workers who have already tested preliminarily positive, we have to quarantine the other patients as well in that ward.”

The imported cases arrived from Nepal, Russia and Brazil.
