Secretary for the Environment KS Wong today said that municipal solid waste charging can bring economic benefits that will help Hong Kong overcome the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Mr Wong emphasised that the bureau will do its best to explain the job-creating benefits of municipal solid waste charging to lawmakers.

“About the municipal solid waste charging, we will try to use our best endeavours to communicate with the lawmakers and let them understand that municipal solid waste charging would actually be helpful to society, even during the pandemic. For instance, we can create more jobs from now on, even before such charging is put in place.”

Mr Wong also pointed out that the Government would need approximately two years to prepare before municipal solid waste charging can be put into effect.

“In terms of the implementation timing of the charging, even if the bill on waste charging is passed, I think it will take probably about two years’ time for us to prepare. We hope that by that time, the economy would have recovered so that we can make it affordable for the general public.

“So by getting LegCo members to understand how the charging benefits society, we hope we can get their support. We certainly have to try our best endeavours to negotiate with them.”
