Flexible work arrangements advised

November 20, 2020

In view of the latest development of the COVID-19 epidemic, the Civil Service Bureau today reminded bureaus and departments to handle work arrangements for employees with flexibility provided that the provision of public services would be maintained.

The Government strives to safeguard the health and safety of its staff under the epidemic.

The bureau issued guidelines to bureaus and departments reminding them to consider taking flexible measures to reduce the number of staff in the office at any one time.

It said departments may consider splitting the staff into two teams, which may then take turns to work from home, so that in the unfortunate event that a team member becomes a confirmed case, it will not bring the entire operation to a halt.

Where operationally feasible, departments may also consider staggering work and lunch hours to the widest possible extent so that staff could avoid peak hours when traveling to and from work and in taking meals.

Departments may also allow individual staff members, such as those who are pregnant, suffering from serious chronic diseases, or can perform their duties from home, to work from home on a case-by-case basis.
