The Centre for Health Protection today expressed concern over a possible COVID-19 outbreak at a dance club in Wan Chai.

The centre’s Communicable Disease Branch Head Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan provided information about a cluster of cases related to the dance club during a press briefing this afternoon.

She also noted that the centre is investigating 12 additional cases, of which eight are imported, two are linked to local cases and two are from unknown sources of infection.

One of the patients without a known source of infection is a 75-year-old businesswoman who went to the Starlight Dance Club on Lockhart Road in Wan Chai on November 14.

Dr Chuang said at least five other people, who have tested preliminary positive, had also been to the club recently.

“According to our preliminary information, many of those concerned, if not all, went to the club on November 14. We suspect that there may have been an outbreak on that day, but we cannot exclude other days.

“I understand that some of them went to the club quite frequently, but not all of them. Some of them only went there on November 14.

“As for the setting, there's a dance instructor with students. So they dance together and supposedly separate from other groups.”

Noting that two dance instructors of the club also taught students at the Heavenly Dance Studio in Sheung Wan, Dr Chuang said the centre is asking for details about the setting of that dance venue as well.

The imported cases are from the US, the UK, the Philippines and India.

Additionally, there are more than 20 preliminary positive cases.
