Population forecast published
In 2028, 55% of Hong Kong's population will live in the New Territories, 30% will be in Kowloon and 15% will be living on Hong Kong Island.
The figures were published in the Planning Department’s report on population distribution projections.
It said the population of the New Territories will increase by 430,200 to 4.36 million and the population in Kowloon will go up by 109,600 to 2.37 million between 2018 and 2028.
In the same period, the population of Hong Kong Island will decrease from 1.25 million to 1.16 million.
It said Kwun Tong, Yuen Long and Sha Tin will be the most populous districts in 2028.
Wong Tai Sin will have the highest proportion of people aged 65 or above, rising from 19% in 2018 to 28% in 2028.
