Flood prevention work ongoing

June 26, 2019

The Government today said the number of flooding black spots in Hong Kong has gone down substantially with the completion of major flood prevention projects.

Secretary for Development Michael Wong made the statement today in response to a lawmaker’s question on flood prevention.

Mr Wong said the Drainage Services Department reviews flooding black spots and locations that are vulnerable to seawater infusion and inundation in the city annually.

As at March, 125 flooding black spots have been eliminated with only six remaining, he said.

Drainage improvement works for flooding black spots at Ting Kok Road in Tai Po, and Wan Chai District have already been completed, with their effectiveness being closely monitored, he added.

The department is taking forward in phases the strengthening of drainage facilities at four other black spots located at Shek Wu Wai in San Tin, Lam Tsuen Valley Basin, Tsim Sha Tsui, and the Southern District.

Mr Wong also said the Government has identified low-lying locations vulnerable to seawater infusion or inundation including Tai O and low-lying areas along the seaside of northwestern Yuen Long.

Measures such as flood walls, demountable flood barriers and drainage flap valves to prevent seawater from flowing in are being implemented.
