Extradition system needed

April 8, 2019

The Government aims to establish a system for the extradition of fugitive offenders, Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng said.

Speaking to reporters today after attending a special meeting of the Legislative Council’s Finance Committee, Ms Cheng said such a system needs to be established as the rule of law is respected in Hong Kong.

The Finance Committee meeting was held to discuss issues including the improper use of a computer.

Ms Cheng said the Court of Final Appeal’s judgment clarifies the limits of Section 161 of the Crimes Ordinance, which relates to improper computer use.

“Therefore it is necessary for appropriate legislative changes to be made in order to ensure that the acts that are being prohibited, or be it outside the current legislation of Section 161 (of the Crimes Ordinance) can still be sanctioned in order to ensure that people's privacy and various matters are being protected.”
