The public can collect a portion of tree waste generated by typhoon Mangkhut for reuse or upcycling, the Environmental Protection Department said today.

The tree waste can be collected at Community Green Stations in Eastern District, Kwun Tong, Sham Shui Po, Sha Tin, Yuen Long and Tuen Mun for free before December 31.

A temporary collection area was set up in the Kai Tak Development Area on September 21 to stockpile tree waste following the passage of the typhoon.

The collection area will stop receiving such waste on November 10.

The department will review the experience gained from the handling of Mangkhut's aftermath and identify areas for improvement to formulate contingency plans for similar situations in the future.

It will also communicate with stakeholders to co-ordinate the management of waste.

Looking ahead, it said the Government will need to build new refuse transfer facilities and increase the capacity of existing ones.
