Rail settlement monitored

July 13, 2018

Government departments have inspected railway facilities at the Tai Wan East Rail Line Station after receiving notification of settlement at the station.

In a statement tonight, the Government said foundation works for the station's topside development were suspended on July 12, the day settlement readings reached the limit set by the Mass Transit Railway.

The statement said the Buildings Department, having inspected the station platform and the overhead line mast, confirmed they are structurally safe.

The Electrical & Mechanical Services Department, reviewing the rail monitoring data submitted by the MTR, confirmed railway safety has not been affected.

While noting foundation works causing settlement in nearby structures can happen, the statement said the Government and the MTR Corporation have stringent monitoring mechanisms to protect railway safety.

In the Tai Wai Station incident, the corporation and government departments took action upon notification of the monitoring results, it added.

The Buildings Department and the MTRC will require the registered building professionals of the topside development project to stipulate mitigation measures.

The department will stringently consider any amended plan for the development project and application to resume works, while the Electrical & Mechanical Services Department will closely monitor the situation.
