Public reminded of smoking risk

May 31, 2018

The Department of Health today reminded the public of the hazards of smoking to mark World No Tobacco Day.

The World Health Organization uses the event to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and to advocate effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

The department said smoking can cause heart disease, strokes and many kinds of non-communicable diseases. Second-hand smoke can harm non-smokers.

It called on smokers to quit the habit as early as possible.

The Government has set a target to cut the prevalence of tobacco use in people aged 15 and above by 30%.

Smokers wanting to quit can call 1833 183 for help.
