Recycling chain enhanced
The Government has promoted the development of the local recycling industry and strengthened support to enhance the operation of the recycling chain.
Secretary for the Environment KS Wong made the statement to the Legislative Council today, saying the Recycling Fund set up by the Government in 2015 facilitates the upgrading of the recycling sector's operational capabilities and efficiency.
On food waste, the Organic Resources Recovery Centre Phase 1 will be commissioned in mid-2018. The Environment Bureau is planning the construction of Phase 2.
Mr Wong said the Food Waste/Sewage Sludge Anaerobic Co-digestion Trial Scheme will be implemented at Tai Po Sewage Treatment Works to raise the city's overall food waste treatment capability.
The bureau will support schools and private housing estates in the installation of composters and will also collaborate with the commercial sector and eateries to collect surplus food for voluntary organisations.
On waste paper recycling, the Government provides sites in the EcoPark and under short-term tenancy as well as berths in public cargo working areas for bidding and use by the recycling sector.
As for recycling of waste plastics, a consultancy study has been conducted on a producer responsibility scheme for plastic containers.
The Environmental Protection Department and the Advisory Committee on Recycling Fund have been liaising with the recycling sector to optimise the fund's operation, Mr Wong added.
