13 Korean MERS cases reported

June 10, 2015

The Centre for Health Protection is monitoring 13 newly reported Middle East Respiratory Syndrome cases in Korea and one case reported by the United Arab Emirates.

The Korean cases involve 10 patients who visited the Samsung Medical Centre emergency department, and three who visited wards in Konyang University Hospital, Dae-Chung Hospital and Hallym University Medical Centre where confirmed patients have stayed.

The UAE case involves a woman aged 77 with underlying illnesses who is in critical condition.

Korea has so far reported 107 MERS cases, and another case was exported from Korea to Mainland China.

In addition to the cases in Korea, 1,155 cases have been reported to the WHO, including at least 444 deaths.

The centre reminded people to consider the health risks of the places they plan to visit and to avoid unnecessary visits to healthcare facilities in places at risk for MERS.

It said it will maintain close communication with the World Health Organisation and Korean authorities.
