Paralympic athletes head to London

August 21, 2012
Hong Kong will send a delegation of 61 people to take part in the London 2012 Paralympic Games from August 29 to September 9.

Twenty-eight athletes will compete in seven events, including athletics, shooting, swimming, and fencing.

Presenting the Hong Kong flag to the games delegation today, Chief Executive CY Leung said the the athletes’ spirit will touch the hearts of Hong Kong people, regardless of their result in the event.

He said paralympic sports in Hong Kong have developed tremendously in the last decade, and the competition standard has risen.

Hong Kong’s disabled athletes have won more than 100 medals since 1972, including 35 gold, and the community is proud of their achievements, he said.

Hong Kong won five gold, three silver, and three bronze medals in seven events at the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008, ranking 26th in 146 participating countries and regions.

Mr Leung said their achievements were not only the result of their tough training but also the support of their family members, coaches, volunteers, support organisations, and the Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled, which is also heading the delegation to London.
