Chief Executive CY Leung today presented the regional flag to the Hong Kong delegation to the London 2012 Olympic Games which open on July 27.
Mr Leung said qualifying for the Olympics is a trial in and of itself, and Hong Kong had reason to rejoice in sending an 85-member delegation to the Games, the largest post-1997.
"Hong Kong may be a small player among the 204 recognised National Olympic Committees of the Olympic Family, but we can be giants with tenacity and determination," he said.
The 42 athletes in the contingent had attained remarkable achievements through many years of training and hard work, he said. The supportive and dedicated team of coaches and officials, encouraging and helping them to fulfill their sporting dreams, are equally praiseworthy.
"Rest assured that the whole community of Hong Kong will be cheering for all of you all the way through the Games," he said.
The London 2012 Olympic Games will be held from July 27 to August 12. About 17,000 athletes from over 200 countries and regions will be competing at the Games.
Hong Kong athletes will participate in 13 sports including badminton, cycling, fencing, shooting and table tennis, and for the first time, in artistic gymnastics and weightlifting.
