Landfills needed for all: CE
July 09, 2013
Chief Executive CY Leung says landfills are needed by the whole community, as Hong Kong is a small but densely populated city.
He told reporters today the Government spares no effort in waste reduction, including recycling food and solid waste. Less will be sent to landfills, he said, if everyone helps to reduce their waste.
He stressed that the funding being sought from the Legislative Council on July 12 is for a two-year study on landfill expansion in Tuen Mun, including how to minimise the impact on residents, but it will not result in expanding it immediately.
The Government will continue to liaise with residents and district council members on how the works can avoid disturbance to them.
Mr Leung said the waste problem does not only involve the Government and residents near landfills. He urged all people to support green living, and help the Government in recycling and reducing waste at source.
