Tseung Kwan O proposal withheld
June 26, 2013
Secretary for the Environment KS Wong says it is necessary to expand all three landfills, but the Tseung Kwan O proposal has been withheld to allow lawmakers time to focus on discussing the other two proposals separately.
Speaking to reporters today, Mr Wong said the Government respects the Legislative Council and will strengthen communication with lawmakers. He hopes that a meeting can be held soon to discuss and vote on the proposals.
The three landfills in need of expansion are strategically located in the east, north and west of Hong Kong to handle the municipal needs of the city, he said.
Mr Wong also said both the expansion and related studies are urgent, as Hong Kong’s landfills will be full within six years, which is a common issue for similar cities.
As lawmakers and the public want to see concrete progress, the Government has announced improvement measures along with a timetable, and would like to conduct them as soon as possible.
He said the Government has maintained contact with lawmakers and district representatives, and will continue to listen to views and requests on the expansions, particularly as there are more views from different districts recently.
