HK political development assured

October 23, 2013
The Central Government truly wants Hong Kong’s constitutional development to be done in accordance with the Basic Law, and with National People’s Congress Standing Committee decisions and interpretations.

This was the message from Chief Executive CY Leung when he briefed reporters in Beijing today, after meeting National People's Congress Standing Committee Chairman Zhang Dejiang, and Hong Kong & Macao Affairs Office Director Wang Guangya.

He updated Mr Zhang on Hong Kong’s latest political, social, economic and livelihood developments.

He said a task force led by the Chief Secretary has been formed to prepare for the public consultation on electoral arrangements for the 2017 Chief Executive Election and the 2016 Legislative Council Election by the end of this year.

Mr Leung quoted Mr Zhang as saying the Central Government truly wants it to be done in accordance with the Basic Law, and with National People’s Congress Standing Committee decisions and interpretations.

On the Manila hostage tragedy, Mr Leung said the Hong Kong and Philippine governments will continue to follow up on the matter, with Central Government support.

He said the country’s development has created many opportunities for Hong Kong, and his Government will grasp them for the betterment of the city and the country.

He said he hopes the Central Government supports Hong Kong in advancing its financial and economic development. He said its development as an offshore renminbi centre is important, as other countries are also interested in the role, adding the city should not lag behind.

With Mr Wang, he discussed renminbi development and Hong Kong’s role in China’s future growth.
