Chinese herbal medicines recalled

August 28, 2014

Chinese herbal medicine wholesaler Hang Wo Drug Company is to recall all batches of five marketed herbal medicines, including radix clematidis, jujubae fructus, rhizoma polygonati, hippocampus and radix codonopsis.

The Department of Health made the recall instruction after a solanaceous alkaloid poisoning case on August 22, involving a 32-year-old woman who felt ill after consuming Chinese herbs from Yuen Long retailer Sun Chung Nam Medicine Company.

Samples of the five herbal medicines from the retailer were found to contain scopolamine, a solanaceous alkaloid.

Those herbal medicines were supplied by Hang Wo Drug Company, in Room 1001, Western Centre, 40-50 Des Voeux Road West, Sheung Wan. It has set up a hotline - 2546 9231 - for enquiries.

Healthcare professionals with the affected herbs should send them to the department's Chinese Medicine Division at Two Landmark East in Kwun Tong, or return the product to the supplier.

Anyone who has taken the affected herbs should consult their doctors if feeling unwell.
