No excuse for riot: CS

February 09, 2016

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam has urged political parties and groups not to find excuses for the Mong Kok riot.

Speaking to reporters today Mrs Lam said society should know the truth, which is that the incident was a riot and society as a whole should condemn it.

She said it was not a hawker management issue nor a governance issue, and was not caused by the ineffectiveness of the non-violence protests connected to the Occupy movement.

Many bodies, including the Executive Council's Non-official Members, pro-government and pan-democratic legislators, and the District Councils, have condemned the riot, she said.

Hong Kong treasures peace, freedom and rationality, and the Government will uphold the rule of law and support frontline enforcement officers, especially Police and Food & Environmental Hygiene Department staff, she added.

Secretary for Security TK Lai said more than 80 Police were injured and one requires an operation. He paid his respects to the officers who bravely upheld public order.
