Mong Kok riot condemned

February 09, 2016

The Government today strongly condemned last night's mob violence in Mong Kok which saw three people arrested and three Police officers injured.

After midnight several-hundred people gathered in mobs and attacked Police and journalists. They damaged police cars and public property, set fires, and threw bricks and other objects at injured police officers who were on the ground.

Public officers were obstructed while handling illegal hawking reports on Portland Street and a large number of people gathered on the road, disturbing public safety and other road users.

After repeated warnings urging them to return to the footpaths, Police took resolute action, including using batons and pepper spray, to stop the unlawful violent acts.

As at 3am three men aged 27 to 35 had been arrested for assaulting police officers and obstruction. Three officers were injured and were sent to hospital.

Police condemned the unlawful behaviour and will make further arrests.
