A tug boat and barge have been identified as having been involved in the Kap Shui Mun Bridge collision incident last night, Chief Executive CY Leung said today.
The vessels were being inspected, he said, and the people concerned had given statements.
The bridge, part of the Lantau Link along with the Tsing Ma Bridge, was closed after the incident, an essential move to ensure the bridge structure was safe for road and railway passengers, he said.
All relevant departments, including the MTR Corporation and Airport Authority, had done their best to shorten the disruption, Mr Leung added.
He noted that an alternative route to Lantau Island – the underwater Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link – will be open in about three years.
It will be about 9.1 kilometers, the longest undersea tunnel in Hong Kong.
