Social order restoration urged

November 04, 2014

Chief Executive CY Leung says social order and the rule of law should be restored in Hong Kong as soon as possible.

A stable legal environment is important for Hong Kong’s status as an international financial and trade centre, Mr Leung told reporters today.

He said Hong Kong has been troubled with a social order problem recently, as some people have been damaging the rule of law by breaching the law and ignoring court injunctions requiring Occupy Central protesters to clear the roads.

It is dangerous for people to say that the injunctions can be ignored as they are a civil procedure.

As an example, he noted that if the losing party in a commercial dispute refused to carry out its legal responsibility after a judgment was laid down, citing the case’s civil nature, Hong Kong's rule of law would be seriously impaired.
