Can wind power our lights? Can construction waste beautify our environment? Find the answers at the Sai Tso Wan Recreation Ground in Lam Tin where you will see lots of 'green' features.
The two-hectare recreation ground opened in April. It was once a landfill for about 1.6 million tonnes of household and commercial waste from 1978 to 1981. The waste filled an area that would have reached 65 metres high.
The area has since been restored and turned into Hong Kong's first permanent playground built on a restored landfill.
With a multi-purpose grass pitch for soccer and baseball, two batting-practice cages, a children's play area and jogging track, the playground also features a gallery where you can play interactive computer games and learn more about renewable energy.
You can see a turbine which can generate electricity from the wind, and light up the playground at night, while panels absorb sunlight and turn it into electricity for indoor lighting and fans.
Do paving blocks made from construction waste look different from those we see on the streets? When you visit the playground, remember to look closely at the footpaths and find out for yourself!
