Award-winning pianists to hit HK stage

Able hands: Pianists Angela Cheng, Alan Chow and Alvin Chow will perform Bernstein's West Side Story - which requires six hands on one piano - during their January concert.

Award-winning pianists Angela Cheng, Alan Chow and Alvin Chow will perform classical and modern pieces at the Sha Tin Town Hall on January 23, and a masterclass will be held on January 24 at the Academy for Performing Arts.

 

At the concert, they will play Chopin's Ballade No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 23 (piano solo), Milhaud's Scaramouche (two pianos), Brahms's Hungarian Dances (one piano, four hands), Scriabin's Nocturne, Op. 9, No. 2 (piano solo, left hand alone), Szymanowska's Waltz (one piano, three hands), Dvorak's Slavonic Dance in G Minor, Op. 46, No. 8 (one piano, four hands), Ravel's Frontispice (one piano, five hands), and Bernstein's West Side Story (one piano, six hands).

 

Angela Cheng, a gold medallist of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition and a prize winner in the Montreal International Piano Competition, is hailed by critics for her remarkable technique, tonal beauty and musicianship. She is considered one of Canada's most distinguished and respected pianists.

 

Alan Chow has won first prize at the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, the UCLA International Piano Competition and the Palm Beach Invitational International Piano Competition.

 

Alvin Chow, who has performed throughout North America and Asia as an orchestral soloist and given numerous recitals, has been a prize winner in the University of Maryland International Piano Competition, the Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Artist Competition and the New York Piano Teachers Congress International Piano Competition.

 

Ticketing details

Presented by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department, the piano concert will be staged at 8pm on January 23 at the Sha Tin Town Hall Auditorium.

 

Tickets at $140, $110 and $80 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. The aged, the disabled, full-time students and social security recipients will enjoy half-price concessions.

 

A piano masterclass will be held at 2pm on January 24 at the Academy for Performing Arts Recital Hall. Free admission tickets are now available at the Cultural Centre's enquiry counter on a first-come, first-served basis.
