7 Tarkovsky classics to be showcased
*
Solaris

Reel Russian: Award-winning Solaris is one of the seven films by Andrei Tarkovsky that will be showcased at the Film Archive October 15 to 17 and the Science Museum October 25 to 31.

Seven major films by Andrei Tarkovsky, the acclaimed master of Soviet cinema, will be showcased at the Film Archive October 15 to 17 and the Science Museum October 25 to 31. They include Ivan's Childhood, Solaris, The Mirror and Nostalgia.

Tarkovsky is the second featured director in the Leisure & Cultural Services Department's Repertory Cinema 2004 series, after Lina Wertmuller. Kenji Mizoguchi will be featured in December.

A Cantonese seminar on Tarkovsky's films will be held October 31 at 4.30pm at the museum.

Tarkovsky was the most important director in modern Russia. While Soviet cinema was embracing social realism, Tarkovsky's films echoed the works of Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni but with sentiments that are uniquely Russian.

All films are in Russian with Chinese and English subtitles, except Nostalgia which will have English subtitles only. Tickets are $50 at URBTIX outlets.
