A threat to terrorism: Elite Airport Security Unit officers practise in a simulated aircraft cabin at their new tactical training facility at Chek Lap Kok Police Station.

A new Police training facility will help ensure Hong Kong remains a step ahead of the growing threat of terrorism around the world.

The commissioning of the Airport Security Unit FX Training Range at Chek Lap Kok Police Station in early May will further enhance security at Hong Kong International Airport.

The facility offers 6,000 square feet of space for tactical drills.

Tactics training is needed to ensure the unit is fully prepared to handle a host of airport security scenarios, particularly terrorism and accidents.

The facility features a firing range for the use of FX simulated ammunition, and rooms for briefings and equipment storage. It complements the existing training facilities the elite unit uses.

Cathay Pacific and the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company have helped create a mock-up aircraft interior to simulate operations aboard planes. Replica check-in counters to simulate the airport terminal building are also in the works.

Although Hong Kong is not considered a terrorist target, the facility will further ensure it remains one of the world's safest travel destinations.
