A former financial controller of a US-based electronic products manufacturer has been convicted at the District Court of accepting $9.6 million in bribes.
Grace Chan, 45, formerly employed by Honeywell Limited, was found guilty today of three counts of an agent accepting an advantage. Judge Sweeney adjourned sentencing to February 23 and remanded the defendant in custody.
The court heard that in mid-1994 Chan approached two partners of a design consultancy in relation to decoration works for Honeywell's Kowloon Bay offices. Chan solicited rebates from the two partners, claiming she could facilitate payments for the contract, and promised to award to the design company another Honeywell contract.
Between August and October 1994, Chan accepted $9.6 million from the two partners for awarding two decoration contracts. Chan left Hong Kong on July 21, 1995, before the Independent Commission Against Corruption launched an investigation, and was later found in New Mexico. She was extradited from the US last August.
