Emergency works at the scene of last month's building collapse on Ma Tau Wai Road will focus on removing dangerous sections of adjoining premises as soon as possible to allow safe assessment of their condition.

Assistant Director of Buildings Hui Siu-wai said today strengthening works at 45J Ma Tau Wai Road have generally been completed. Workers will now start removing loose parts from 45H.

Mr Hui said clearing seriously-damaged areas will enable inspectors to safely assess the structural condition of 45G and H. If they are safe, the Buildings Department will consider arranging for residents to collect valuables from their flats. However, 45H is seriously damaged and may need to be demolished completely to avoid serious accidents.

The department has worked to prevent the emergency works from affecting adjoining buildings. If inspections go well, the temporary closure order for 49 Ma Tau Wai Road will be lifted, to allow residents to return home for the Lunar New Year holiday.

Closure orders on 45E and 45F will be lifted as soon as safety is ensured.
