The public will be consulted before the Government formulates concrete proposals on the use of the border area.

Speaking in the Legislative Council today, Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology John Tsang said the Government has an open mind on the use of the area, and the Planning Department is conducting a study on its long-term development.

The scope of the four-stage study includes the development constraints and potential of the area as well as its long-term use.

Third stage of study complete

The department has completed the third stage of the study and will consult the public on the findings at the end of this month. The whole study will be completed in 2004-05.

Mr Tsang said the department will collect public views through various organisations and channels, and forward them to relevant bureaux and departments for further consideration.

The Government welcomes any good proposals that can benefit the economy and provide more employment opportunities, he said, adding that they will be considered and studied seriously with a new mindset.
