New bus to promote road safety

Learning about road safety has never been more fun with the Police Force's new Road Safety Bus.

Deputy Commissioner of Police and Chairman of Road Safety Council Dick Lee unveiled the single-decker bus at a carnival in Victoria Park on January 4.

Safety on wheels: The road safety bus offers kids updated road safety info. Young cyclists put on a spectacular performance at the carnival.

The bus sports a host of innovative features, such as an exhibit area and an information technology section, along with a lecture centre, a simulated driving and road environment, and facilities for people with disabilities.

The Police started making use of a road safety bus in the 1970s.

In 2001, a design competition was also organised to make the bus an even more appealing tool for public education. It drew more than 2,300 entries from primary and secondary school students.

Winners of the best bus body design competition received prizes at the carnival. Their creative ideas were included in the bus' final design, and the works of all participants were put on display.

Senior citizens, kindergarten pupils and bands performed at the carnival, which also featured cycling demonstrations and games stalls.
