Chief Executive Donald Tsang has expressed deep sorrow over the weekend's tragedy at Kwai Shing East Estate in which two people were killed and three injured by a knife-wielding man. He said the Government will review its resources and support services for former mental-illness patients.
A 42-year-old estate resident has been charged with murder and wounding over the May 8 attack.
Speaking after the Hospital Authority Convention 2010 opening ceremony today, Mr Tsang expressed condolences to the victims' families and wished the injured a quick recovery.
Noting resources for mental health services grew to $30 million last year and $100 million this year, he said further study is needed on preventing similar tragedies and ensuring former mental-illness patients can reintegrate into society.
Secretary for Health & Welfare Dr York Chow said mental health services have been under continuous review in recent years, and extra resources have been injected into community services to increase the number of doctors, mental-health nurses and social workers.
"The important element is how to co-ordinate the various services, both from the hospitals and the mental health clinics, all the way to the social workers, the non-government organisations and so on in the community," he said.
