Tainted milk products not in HK

Precautionary action: Centre for Food Safety Controller Dr Constance Chan says the 69 Mainland milk products contaminated with melamine have not been imported to Hong Kong. Forty additional products will be tested.

Centre for Food Safety Controller Dr Constance Chan says the 69 consignments of Mainland infant-milk products contaminated with melamine have not been imported to Hong Kong.

Speaking to reporters this afternoon Dr Chan said the centre contacted local importers and retailers after Mainland authorities announced a list of 22 companies with products contaminated with the chemical.

Although the products were not sold in Hong Kong the centre has taken 40 additional samples of other dairy products made by the companies for tests. Results will be available in the coming days.

"We are now targeting those companies which are already known to have their products contaminated with melamine. We will also take samples of products made by other companies," Dr Chan said.

The centre has informed local importers of the latest development and has asked them to stop importing or selling problematic products.

It has also asked importers and retailers to closely monitor the demand and supply of milk powder in Hong Kong and make appropriate adjustments to meet consumer demand.
