Tokyo offers model for HK's cultural district: CS

Japan's Art Triangle Roppongi which successfully merges culture and the arts with people's daily life is a good reference for the West Kowloon Cultural District project, Chief Secretary Henry Tang says.

In the busy Roppongi district of Tokyo, The National Art Centre, the Suntory Museum of Art, and the Mori Art Museum mark three points of a triangle. The three work together to promote art appreciation.

After visiting Roppongi Hills this morning, Mr Tang learned more about the Art Triangle's concept, management and operations. He also toured the National Art Centre and the Tokyo Midtown which integrates cultural, business and residential facilities with restaurants, shops and public space.

Tokyo tour: Chief Secretary for Administration Henry Tang tours the National Art Centre facilities and calls on Minister of Foreign Affairs Masahiko Koumura and former Prime Minister and Japan Hong Kong Parliamentarians League Special Advisor Yoshiro Mori.

"Tokyo has strived to develop its cultural and creative industries in recent years. I am pleased to have this opportunity to better understand the ideas and their execution. This will shed light on our efforts to turn Hong Kong into a metropolitan city with a robust cultural and arts scene," Mr Tang said.

Mr Tang also met Minister of Foreign Affairs Masahiko Koumura and former Prime Minister and Japan Hong Kong Parliamentarians League Special Advisor Yoshiro Mori and described Hong Kong's latest developments. Both sides hoped to see further co-operation and exchanges in social cultural development and environmental protection.

Before concluding his first visit to Japan, Mr Tang attended the Tokyo Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office's lunar year-end luncheon and addressed a gathering of Hong Kong people and overseas Chinese living in Japan. Senior Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Hitoshi Kimura also hosted a dinner for Mr Tang and his delegation.

The Chief Secretary and his delegation will return to Hong Kong tomorrow.
