Toxin found in scallop sample

The Centre for Food Safety warns consumers to avoid scallops after one was found to contain paralytic shellfish toxin.

The sample was collected from a fish stall at Shek Wu Hui Market in Sheung Shui. The stall's remaining stock has been disposed of. The centre is tracing the source.

It recently took 36 samples of shellfish for testing. The natural toxin is sometimes found in bi-valve shellfish. It is heat-stable and so cannot be destroyed through cooking.
