It is now safer and easier for the elderly to get around public housing estates, Secretary for Housing, Planning & Lands Michael Suen says. He told legislators today that by last November, 115 works projects improving barrier-free access in new estates had been completed, with more to be finished in 2006-07.

Entrances, corridors and doors now have ample width, with ramps and handrails installed at appropriate locations, with non-slip floor tiles. Recreation and leisure facilities for seniors have also been built where suitable.

The department drew up a programme to enhance estate access for seniors following a review in 2001.
