Further tests on a Chinese Pond Heron found dead in Lok Ma Chau have confirmed H5N1 avian influenza.
The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department has inspected more than 20 chicken farms within five kilometres of where the bird was found. There is no abnormal mortality and the chickens are asymptomatic. Frequent inspections will be maintained on poultry farms to ensure proper precautions are taken.
People are reminded to observe good personal hygiene. They should avoid contact with wild birds and live poultry and wash their hands thoroughly should there be any contact.
The Chinese Pond Heron is an occasional migratory bird and many are residents of Hong Kong's wetlands.
