Vibrio cholerae find closes Aberdeen seafood stall

*
Food & Environmental Hygiene Department

A seafood stall in the public carpark at Aberdeen Promenade was ordered closed today after a cholera-causing bacteria was found in its fish tank.

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department today confirmed the presence of vibrio cholerae of the Ogawa serotype in a water sample it collected on October 30.

The department will step up its water-quality monitoring of other fish tanks in the area.

It issued the closure order to the offending stall keeper under the Public Health & Municipal Services Ordinance. The premises will remain closed until the department is assured the health hazard has been eliminated.

Department staff thoroughly disinfected the stall this afternoon and collected environmental swabs for testing.

To prevent cholera and other food-borne diseases, the public should observe good personal, food and environmental hygiene at all times.

Seafood should be thoroughly cooked as vibrio cholerae cannot survive high temperatures.
