New staff-deployment arrangements at swimming pools will be implemented after 44 lifeguards applied for retirement under the Second Voluntary Retirement Scheme.
The Leisure & Cultural Services Department said that as an alternative to outsourcing the management of some pools, it will resolve the issue through staff streamlining and rationalisation.
The plan has been designed after a critical review of the manpower situation at public pools and consultation with the staff concerned, having full regard for the need to maintain service and safety standards.
The new arrangements will remove staff concerns over outsourcing, allowing them to dedicate themselves to their duties.
Lifeguard union representatives said no industrial action will be taken on October 1. They have been briefed on the new arrangements and a letter setting out details of the new arrangements has been sent to them and lifeguards.
