CE welcomes CDC's decision to lift travel ban
*

Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa has welcomed the decision by the US Centres for Disease Control & Prevention to lift its travel advisory on Hong Kong.

"The announcement is a further indication that SARS is contained, travel to Hong Kong is safe and life is returning to normal," he said.

Mr Tung said that the announcement, in addition to that of the World Health Organisation on May 23, reinforces the world's confidence in Hong Kong's ability to control the virus and limit the further spread of the disease.

"As Hong Kong continues to persevere through these incredibly difficult circumstances, we must thank our medical professionals - especially the medical doctors, nurses and support staff who remain dedicated to the health of our citizens," he said.

It is also the result of the concerted efforts of the whole community in controlling the spread of SARS.

Mr Tung stressed that we must continue to be vigilant in our recovery efforts.

"We remain committed to combating the virus and safeguarding the public's health while making Hong Kong a favoured international destination," he said.

Financial Secretary Antony Leung said the CDC's decision would help attract visitors and investors from North America to Hong Kong, enhancing our economic recovery.

Noting that the US is one of Hong Kong's major sources of tourists, Secretary for Economic Development & Labour Stephen Ip also welcomed the CDC's decision.

He expects that it will take some time for Hong Kong to recapture its place in the US market.

Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong said its decision followed a video conference he held on June 3 with it's Director Julie Gerberding, and other officials.

This decision, together with the lifting of WHO's travel advisory on May 23, demonstrated international confidence in Hong Kong's ability to fight the SARS virus and protect the health and safety of our citizens, he said.

Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology Henry Tang said the CDC and the WHO decisions will enhance Hong Kong's fundamental position as the trading and industrial centre for the Pearl River Delta.

Mr Tang said they will also help Hong Kong organise international exhibitions and send people to participate in overseas events.

The Government will explore more options in holding exhibitions overseas in the coming months, he added.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong is also delighted to learn that the centers has removed their advisory on travel to the territory.

Its chairman James Thompson said the decision is the correct one.

"Some American companies have been waiting for the CDC to lift their advisory before resuming normal operations in Hong Kong. We see the CDC decision as a major turning point in the process of getting back to our normal business activities."

He said AmCham will devote energies to spreading the word to friends and business associates throughout the US that Hong Kong is a safe city to visit.

"We look forward to seeing our fellow Americans enjoying the excitement and opportunities available to them in this vibrant city once again."
