A $130 million fund in the name of SARS heroine Dr Tse Yuen-man has been proposed for strengthening the studies and training of healthcare workers.
Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa unveiled the proposal after he attended Dr Tse's funeral service today.
Mr Tung paid tribute to her professionalism and altruism in caring for patients stricken with the virus which eventually claimed her own young life. He said Dr Tse's story was a shining example to Hong Kong people.
The Government will seek approval from the Legislative Council's Finance Committee for $200 million to establish a fund for healthcare workers.
Of this, $70 million will be used to assist healthcare workers infected with the disease, and $130 million will be used for strengthening their studies and training.
Mr Tung said the fund for studies and training will be called the Dr Tse Yuen-man Training Fund, and hoped it will help nurture more outstanding and kind-hearted doctors like Dr Tse who have wholeheartedly served the community.
