Clean up operation: More than 12,000 residents from over 50 public rental estates are expected to participate in the cleaning projects in their estates to support the Housing Department's annual "Operation Tai Ping Tei".

More than 12,000 residents from over 50 public rental estates are expected to participate in the cleaning projects in their estates to support the Housing Department's annual "Operation Tai Ping Tei".

Officiating at the kick-off ceremony at Choi Hung Estate, Assistant Director/Estate Management of the Housing Department Lai Ip-cheung said that the Department has organised the operation for the fourth consecutive year to encourage staff, cleaning contractors and residents to maintain the estates' cleanliness.

To cope with the increased volume of waste and refuse that residents dispose of during Lunar New Year's eve, the Housing Department will step up cleaning services at public rental housing estates. Mr Lai appealed to residents to properly dispose of unwanted furniture, adding that temporary refuse disposal sites will be set up in the estates.

To tie in with the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department and Department of Health's initiatives, the Housing Department has organised publicity and educational programmes on preventing the breeding of rodents and mosquitoes and preventing the spread of the bird-flu virus.

Sixteen Housing Department representatives were appointed to sit in the Area Committees of District Councils to coordinate district-wide cleaning activities with the aim to of providing a quality living environment.

Housing Department Volunteer Corps members also helped elderly tenants living in Choi Hung Estate to clean their households to prepare for the Chinese New Year.
