The newly-built Fanling Public Library opened today. It replaces the existing small library at Cheung Wah Estate.
The 2,200-square-metre Library on the second floor of 9 Wo Mun Street in Fanling is nearly 11 times the size of the old one. A multimedia library, computer and information centre, activities room, study room and coffee corner round out the traditional offerings of books and periodicals for adults and children.
Its rich collection of updated reference materials includes about 120,000 Chinese and English books, 7,000 compact discs, CD-ROMs and audiotapes and 4,400 quick reference books.
Its newspaper and magazine section includes more than 150 local and overseas titles.
To cope with the increasing demand for self-learning, the library has 30 computers for readers to gain access to the multimedia materials, the Internet and the CD-ROM search facilities. It also has 11 Online Public Access Catalogue terminals.
To promote interest in reading, the Library will organise children's hours, interest clubs, book displays and reading programme activities.
It opens weekdays from 9am to 8pm, except on Thursday when it is closed. It closes at 7pm on Saturdays, and 5pm on Sundays and public holidays. The Students' Study Room opens until 10 pm on weekdays (except Thursday, when the library is closed).
Students and members of cultural and educational organisations that are interested in knowing more about the Library's facilities and services are welcome to contact the Library on 2669 4444 to arrange group visits.
